hot dog
Jennifer Iserloh, The Skinny Chef
Nothing is easier to cook in the summer than a hot dog on a grill. Kids love em, and so do adults for that matter. If you want to turn your hot dog into a grown up gourmet meal, here are some great ways to dress it up.

The Base
Shop for a good quality turkey dog, or a low fat all beef dog that is nitrate free, since nitrates can turn to a cancer-causing compound called nitrosamine under high heat on a grill. Make horizontal slices across the hot dog's surface for more even cooking.

A Better Bun
Whole wheat hot dog buns are a great way to get more grains for grown-ups who desperately need more fiber in their diets, and brands like Vermont Breads and Rudi's Bakery, make high quality whole grain hot dog buns that are soft and tender. Brioche buns are marvelous, have a soft texture and get crisp on the grill for a special treat minus the fiber. Just lightly brush whichever bun you choose with olive oil before grilling.

Terrific Topping
Here's your chance to get really creative while turning just one hot dog into a filling, vegetable rich meal.

Guacamole

Sweet Tomato Curry Sauce

Tropical Salsa

Tomato Cantaloupe Salsa
