Red, White and Blue: 9 Fourth of July Desserts!

I made the FROZEN RASPBERRY MOUSSE, and let me tell you, this is a LABOR INTENSIVE job if you have no idea what your up against like I did. I've never made a mousse and I've never strained seeds from anything in my life. I DON'T recommend this if you haven't done one of those two things, but if you want to challenge yourself then go right ahead.
The article states that "Straining the raspberries is a labor of love..." which is the most underwhelming statement ever. I stood for over an hour cleaning, pureeing, and straining raspberries. Again, though, I've never done it before.
Everything else was pretty straight-forward, however. Make a meringue, beat whipped cream, add gelatin... all relatively easy. Timing is everything once you get to steps 4-7.
I'm not quite sure where I went wrong, though I suspect my well-meaning friend over whipped the meringue, and the mousse came out less mousse-y and more frozen raspberry-cream popsicle. Still, when topped with the extra berries (I chose strawberries and blackberries), the sauce, and whipped cream it tasted pretty good. Overall I'd recommend trying to make this recipe at least once if you're interested in it.

This is a great dessert. I made it using the basic recipe for company and then decided to make it with a variation for our Fourth of July cookout. For the gelatin layer I thawed two packages of strawberry jello in 1 1/2 cups boiling water. Then I added 1/2 cup very cold water and enough ice cubes to make 1 cup. And, then I added 1 cup of cool whip to the jello mixture. I spread it over the pound cake pieces and refrigerated for about an hour or less. The rest of the recipe i did as it is written except i did alternating rows of raspberries and sliced strawberries for the stripes on the flag. Delicious!

Where is the recipe for the Raspberry Citrus Bars????!!!! I looked through all 1400+ recipes (because the link didn't work) and didn't find it - what a waste of time!

Our typical 4th of July in Texas require a Brisket, Charro Beans and a Potato salad. ,We Marinade the Brisket 24 hours and then cook it at 225 for about 12 hours. Our Pinto beans start soaking when we start the marinade. The secret of Pintos is never soak them for more than eight hours because they will start to ferment and they are touchy. 1 pound of soaked beans, A large chopped onion and a 1/4 pound of bacon chopped up. Cover with water and in about three hours you have charro beans, Add a little salt and cilantro and that all you need. Mos folks try to get fancy with potato salad and they spoil it when they do. KISS is the best method. Peel and cube the potatos (I dont know anyone that likes potato skins in potato salad) Boil them just untill they are al dente (That means not mushy) Hard boil the eggs (Put them in boiling water for ten minutes and immediately put them in ice water) Chop a medium onion (Not too fine) Add the eggs onion and potatoes in a large bown and add enough Mayo to glue the stuff togeter, A small shot of yellow mustard will kick up the taste Serve this with copias quantitys of Shiner Bock and you have a Texas fourth of July picnik (By the way the KISS method means Keep It Simple Stupid) If you gotta have a desert A Strawberry Shortcake is simple and vert appropriate

Too bad I canot enjoy these gorgeous desserts. I am a diabetic and I don't see anything sugar free. I will get some fruit in season and maybe treat myself to some sugar free ice cream. That sounds good and yummy. Also, my children are not here and I lost my husband. No fun in my house but Ill try. I will enjoy the fireworks. That sounds pretty good.
