People often refer to us as the "cupcake sisters," and we love this because baking, for us, has been a huge part of our family life since before we can even remember. As little girls, we baked alongside our grandmother every day in her kitchen. Everything we learned about baking we learned from her. We would stand beside her at the kitchen counter as she worked her magic, and we acquired her passion for perfection. She sparked our dream of opening a bakery together, and she was our inspiration for starting Georgetown Cupcake.
Cupcakes are more than just delicious little treats; they are individual little pieces of edible art that capture your personality and speak to your soul.
We opened our first bakery together in the Georgetown neighborhood of Washington D.C. five and a half years ago on Valentine’s Day. Since then, our lives have been a whirlwind in the kitchen. We started what we thought was going to be a sleepy little bakery, but from the moment we opened our doors, our cupcakes became a cult phenomenon. Since that Valentine’s Day, we have expanded Georgetown Cupcake with bakeries in Bethesda, Maryland, in New York City (SoHo), on Newbury Street in Boston, and on Los Angeles’s Robertson Boulevard. We have 100 different flavors of cupcakes and ship them nationwide. Every day, we bake more than 20,000 cupcakes from scratch.
For the past three years, TLC has been showcasing our crazy lives in the kitchen in our television series DC Cupcakes. We have also penned two cookbooks, The Cupcake Diaries and Sweet Celebrations (HarperCollins), sharing our beloved cupcake recipes with our fans.
We have a very simple baking (and business) philosophy: Focus on one thing and make it the best in its class. When we opened Georgetown Cupcake, we were determined to make the best cupcakes in the world: to use the very best ingredients, to bake our cupcakes fresh throughout the day, every day and to make them taste amazing. This philosophy is still the core of our business today. And every day, we strive to share our passion for cupcakes with the people who travel from all over the world to visit our bakeries and try a Georgetown Cupcake.
For us, baking is very personal. There is a certain satisfaction in knowing that something we make by hand has the power to make others happy. As we mention in the introduction to our first cookbook, to us, cupcakes are more than just delicious little treats; they are individual little pieces of edible art that capture your personality and speak to your soul.
We’re so excited to be Guest Editors on Kitchen Daily this week and to share some of our recipes, stories and baking secrets with all of you. We hope you enjoy!
