To choose a sideboard for a holiday dinner, Turner, whose book Nathan Turner’s American Style is out now, went to L.A. shop Lief and found a vintage Swedish 1920s piece ($8,700; liefalmont.com). Its neutral color and simple lines are a great starting point for his laid-back, elegant look.

Embrace Items with Crossover Style

These serving utensils from Astier de Villatte combine a mod matte finish with an old-fashioned, formal shape. “They’re elegant but not fussy,” says Turner. “It may be the Californian in me that can’t get too fancy.” ($30 each; abchome.com.)

Rethink Serving
