KD Finds: Chef Sam Talbot's Favorite Holiday Gifts
1. The Filling Station
"I like to give people flavored oils and vinegars from The Filling Station," Sam reveals. Located in New York City's Chelsea Market, this unique shop specializes in organic and all-natural products. Try pairing their tangy lemon olive oil, infused with sweet Mediterranean lemons, with their fig vinegar, made with fresh fig puree, for a spectacular dressing.
$10 for 200 ml bottle and $16 for 375 ml bottle; tfsnyc.com
2. The New Chef Uniform
"For a guy like me that’s always standing, always on the go [and] working in different environments, I don’t wear chef coats. For me a really solid button down that looks good but is also functional is what I’m looking for," Sam tells us. He loves the utilitarian vibe of men's clothing line W.R.K. "Just great thick shirts you can wear in the kitchen. If something hits [it], it's not the end of the world."
Top it off with a vintage denim or indigo apron. "Why not look good while you cook?" Sam quips. We love these inspired versions from Birdkage.
3. Hand-crafted Oyster Knives
On his list, Sam adds "a nice hand-crafted oyster knife because [he feels] no kitchen is complete without one." American-made oyster knives from R. Murphy, created in a variety of shapes for different shell forms, look handsome stored in a butter-soft leather knife roll.
$14-$37 for each oyster knife and $85 for shellfish roll-up; rmurphyknives.com
4. Inspirational Coffee Table Books
Sam likes to give inspirational coffee table books as gifts during the holidays. "One of my favorites is The Library of Phillip Johnson, Selections from The Glass House," he reveals. Readers can explore the ideas that shaped famous architect Philip Johnson's vision in 100 selections curated from his private study at his residence the Glass House, a national historic landmark and an icon of modern architecture.
5. Thorny Rose Wine
"They’re really great wines for people who are starting in off in the wine game or are a little intimidated by so many different types of wines out there," describes Sam of this new brand of wines made with grapes grown around Washington's Cascade mountain range. "They have a really nice Riesling, Chardonnay, Red Blend and a couple other ones." At less than $12 per bottle, they are the perfect stocking stuffers.
$11 each; sold at select wine and liquor stores nationwide
