Crumbs Bake Shop closed its doors forever on Monday. Crumbs was the largest specialty cupcake chain in the nation, which is why it surprised customers and employees alike when the store abruptly announced it was closing at the end of the work day on Monday, July 7th. The cupcake and coffee chain had 48 stores in 10 states. The chain got its start as a small shop on the Upper West Side of Manhattan. In 2003, the small business was run by husband and wife Jason and Mia Bauer until Crumbs was bought out in 2011 and went public that June.

The closure was even more sudden to the employees of Crumbs, who say they were informed of the bad news Monday morning. Crumbs told the Wall Street Journal, "Regrettably Crumbs has been forced to cease operations and is immediately attending to the dislocation of its devoted employees while it evaluates its limited remaining options."

Crumbs Cupcakes were known for being bigger than the average cupcake, which the Washington Post believes put the cupcakes at a disadvantage. Bigger cupcakes mean more calories, which could potentially turn off customers. Crumbs cupcakes were four inches and covered in thick frosting. According to NPR, one Crumbs vanilla cupcake contained 780 calories and almost 35 grams of fat.

We will miss their cookie dough cupcake for the rest of time!
