Sales of almond milk have risen nearly 200 percent at the London chain Waitrose. Hazelnut and coconut varieties have also increased by 30 percent.
Alternatives to cow's milk were once limited to individuals with allergies, but now they are growing more common even amongst consumers without lactose intolerance. This year, almond milk has reigned supreme; not even popular soy milk could keep up. This could be due partially to the soy itself, which can contain phytoestrogens. Some studies have associated phytoestrogens to an increased risk in breast cancer even though the evidence is not full proof.
Nuts have been lauded by experts for their health benefits, so it's no surprise that almond milk has been flying off the shelves in response. Silk's Pure Almondmilk sold more than Silk's Soymilk for the first time ever. Sales of the almond milk brand have leaped 49 percent since last year. Almond Breeze has seen a 63 percent jump in sales.
