KitchenDaily's Shane Kelly takes favorite comfort food dishes and makes them more wholesome, as in this Pizza Meat Balls recipe. By subbing whole wheat dough and low-fat cheese for the regular white dough and full-fat ingredients, and choosing not to deep fry the balls, Shane takes this guilty pleasure up a healthy notch. Watch the related video to see Shane prepare the Pizza Meat Balls recipe.

Ingredients

Serves:

Directions

Remove sausage meat from casings into a medium bowl. Add mozzarella, Parmesan and the parsley or oregano, and mix with your hands until just combined. Form into 16 even balls (about 1 tablespoon each).

Separate dough into 16 even pieces (about 1-inch balls). Working with one piece of dough at a time, flatten it with your fingers and stretch dough. Lightly dust dough on both sides with whole wheat flour. Wrap dough around a sausage ball and pinch dough well to seal.

Heat oil in a large non-stick skillet over moderate heat and cook pizza balls over moderately low heat, turning them, until golden brown and sausage is cooked, about 15 minutes (cut one in half to see if cooked through). Let pizza cool for 5 minutes before serving. Serve with marinara sauce for dipping.

I actually need a recipe to see how to make the dough....It looks simple but I've had trouble making dough for things like this: My Mothers recipe for "Cabbage Rolls"calls for dough and I end up using canned biscuits. Thanks from Deanna

That is just retarded. Pan frying makes no less recipes than deep frying. Fat is fat. There is no way around it. This recipe is not worth even trying if you are trying to lose calories.

Amen to that! People act like eating some fat is going to kill you. I understand if you have some sort of condition where you have to be careful, but people seem to forget that your body needs some fat to be healthy.

I'm wondering if it would work the same if they were baked rather than fried in oil? That cuts out some of the fat and calories...right?

We only use olive oil in our house. It's a healthy oil and I think would do nicely in this recipe.

Would have been great to have a recipe included for the whole wheat pizza dough, or can I buy it ready to go somewhere?

You can buy it ready made for $1-$2 at Walmart or Hannaford stores (in plastic bag in deli area)

I'd make several dozen small meatballs (my own recipe), bake, freeze to have on hand, and use for soups, sauces, and these stuffed pizza meatballs! It's funny, I'm Italian have had fried dough w/meatballs on top,but never pizza balls! Great idea!

These sound delicious, but if I make them I would pre-cook the meatballs, whether beef or sausage due to the risk of them not being well done enough to prevent illness. I'd use my little scooper, line on a pan and pop in oven. THEN stuff and fry!

This recipe says "serves 16," but it only makes 16 1 oz meatballs. No one's gonna just eat one.
