Facing a mound of uneaten mashed potatoes? Celebrate. It saves you a step when making this hearty beef shepherd's pie.

Ingredients

Serves:

Directions

Heat the oil in a large heavy skillet over medium-high heat until it shimmers. Add onion, garlic, 1/2 teaspoon salt, and pepper and saute, stirring occasionally, until onion is golden, about 5 minutes. Add beef and 1/2 teaspoon salt and brown meat, stirring to break up lumps, about 4 minutes. Add soup and Worcestershire and bring to a boil. Boil until liquid in pan is completely evaporated, about 10 minutes.

Preheat broiler.

Transfer beef mixture to a 3-qt flameproof baking dish, then spread potatoes evenly over beef. Broil until potatoes are browned in places and heated through, about 8 minutes.

It is Cottage Pie if it is not made with ground lamb. The real English language was changed enough by Webster so why change what has been a traditional name for this dish.

Ok people, do we really need to start calling it Shepherds Pie American Style cause thats what it is. I never had one with lamb, always with beef, stop being so literal. Blah blah blah, shepherds have sheep, blah blah blah.

I did have 1 problem with this article - no prep info for the potatoes. I'm assuming they're using boxed, powdered instant potatoes, but unfortunately that will not fly in my household. Still a good recipe that I may use, although my prep time will be much longer to make homemade mashed potatoes.

VERY INTERESTING. hOWEVER, YOU NEVER MENTIONED AT WHAT TEMPERATURE TO PREHEAT THE OVEN ,AND HOW LONG TO KEEP THE DISH IN THE OVEN. MY PERSONANLE OPINION IS THAT THIS WAS A VERY POOR PRESENTATIN AND CERTAINLY NOT PROOF READ.

Re-read the article. It says "preheat broiler" therefore no temperature, and it says "broil until potatoes are heated through and browned, about 8 minutes". What was your problem with the article again? You can't read? And I believe the word you are looking for was "personal" not "personanle", whatever that is.

Sorry, but it's not Shepherd's pie unless it's made with lamb (as in sheep and shepherd). Your recipe is what the British (and I am one of them) call Cottage Pie, which is made with beef.

this is not shepherd's pie. It's called cottage pie. Shepherds do not have cows, they have sheep. Cottage pie= minced beef. Shepherd's pie= minced lamb.

I used a can of beef broth and added frozen corn, peas, green beans, and some cooked carrots instead of the can of vegetable soup. I also used Idahoian Instant Mashed Potatoes for the toppping. Made a hearty dish and very tasty.
