    • The traditional version of these classic Italian cookies, known as genetti, leaves well enough alone with just an anise-flavored frosting, but adding a coat of coconut never hurts, especially for a special holiday sweet. If you like, color the coconut with food gel in a festive hue.

    Directions

    Preheat the oven to 350°F. Butter two baking sheets. Combine the flour and baking powder in a bowl. In the bowl of a standing mixer fitted with the paddle attachment, cream the shortening and sugar until fluffy. Add the eggs and vanilla and mix until batter is pale yellow. Add the flour in batches, alternating with the milk, until the dough takes on the consistency of putty. Knead the dough until soft. Pinch 2 tablespoons from the dough and roll into a ball. Place on the baking sheet and flatten slightly with the palm of your hand. Repeat with remaining dough. Bake for 10 to 15 minutes. Let cool on a rack.

    Meanwhile, make the anise glaze. Combine the confectioner's sugar, milk, and anise extract in a saucepan and cook, stirring over low heat until thoroughly combined and smooth. Place the coconut on a shallow plate. When cookies are mostly cooled, dip the cookies with a spoon or your fingers into the warmed glaze, then roll around in the coconut. Transfer to waxed paper and let cool.

    This was amazing! my family and me...fell in love! definitly a 5 star cookie. I reccomend this for children and well...anyone who wants to have fun with it! My daughter wife, and me were amazed! i think this was great!
